Biography

Mr. Hamed is a community activist and the Director of Access Consulting and Professional Services in New Haven Connecticut, a service corporation that provide a variety of services to community members. Yasir came to community advocacy more than fourteen years ago. He started as Job Developer and Case Manager at the Interfaith Refugee Ministry IRM between 2000 and 2002, and then established the African Community Center for Educational and Social Services in New Haven, CT and have performed many social and community activities in association with the City of New Haven and the New Haven Festival of Arts and Ideas.

Mr. Hamed served as the executive director for the Connecticut Coalition of Mutual Assistance Associations CCMAA in Hartford, CT between 2006 and 2008 managing the organization’s grants and operations budget.

Mr. Hamed is currently serving his sixth term as President of the Board for Orange Landing Condominiums Association in West Haven, CT.

Academically, he has been Academic Director of SIT’s Intensive Arabic Language Studies program in Jordan since 2008, and is currently serving as Interim Administrative and Operations Director at the SIT Study Abroad Jordan Center.

He recently completed doctoral-level research in transformative education and language learning pedagogies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and is researching cultural content and its effects on language acquisition, focusing on immersion in the teaching of foreign languages. He is completing his doctoral degree in Education at Southern New Hampshire University.

Yasir has more than 14 years’ experience teaching Arabic. He is a lecturer at Fairfield University and founder of the Arabic Language Learning Program in New Haven, Connecticut, and he has taught Arabic at Yale and Dartmouth College. He developed Arabic language programs at institutions including Wesleyan University, Fairfield University, and University of New Haven. His research interests include experiential education and methods of teaching Arabic. He is a member of the National Society for Experiential Education and a specialist in designing, developing, and leading study abroad programs in the Middle East. He is also a journalist, editor, and translator.
